The National Unity Platform (NUP) has expressed profound condolences and admiration for the late Tooro King, Oyo Nyimba Kabamaba Iguri Rukiidi IV, describing him as an inspirational leader who has left a lasting legacy for Uganda’s youth.
In a statement delivered by Shamim Malende, Woman Member of Parliament for Kampala District, at the historic Karuzika Royal Palace on Wednesday, the party paid tribute to King Oyo’s remarkable leadership journey.
Malende said that by ascending to the throne at just three years old and ruling until his passing at the age of 34, Oyo’s life exemplifies that young people can rise to positions of influence and bring about meaningful change.
She said the party and all Ugandans of goodwill will celebrate King Oyo as a symbol of unity, peace, and stability both within his Kingdom and beyond.
Malende applauded Oyo’s works, particularly his advocacy for environmental conservation, improved healthcare, and education for the marginalized, adding that such efforts should inspire the next generation of leaders.
The MP also remarked on the close relationship between King Oyo and the people of Buganda, noting his special bond with Kabaka Ronald Muwenda II, as one of his guardians.
Malembe asked all Ugandans to mourn the loss of a leader who played a significant role in fostering unity and development in Uganda.
King Oyo’s death has been widely mourned across the country, with many viewing him as a youthful leader who exemplified humility, commitment, and service.
Meanwhile, the retired Bishop of Bunyoro-Kitara Diocese, Rt. Rev. Nathan Kyamanywa, has called on the people of Tooro to remain united during this period of mourning following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamaba Iguri Rukiidi IV.
Kyamanywa, along with his wife Peace Kyamanywa, eulogized King Oyo as a leader who brought hope to Tooro, Bunyoro, and Uganda at large, demonstrating that transformation and community development are possible through dedicated leadership.
At the Karuzika Royal Palace, numerous closed-door meetings have been ongoing, with key officials in attendance.
Among them are Brig. Gen. Kayanja Muhanga, the UPDF Commander of Land Forces, and Lt. Gen. Tumukunde, the Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development.
Also present is Charles Kamurasi, the head of the Babiito Tooro clan, who retains the highest authority in the kingdom following the king’s demise.
By around 2:00 PM, Kamurasi was seen boarding Brig. Gen. Kayanja’s official vehicle as he left the palace, while Tumukunde was making his way to join the ongoing discussions. As tradition dictates, specific rituals will be observed before King Oyo’s burial.
The new king is expected to undergo traditional ceremonies, including a unique ritual where he will be guided to bury the King by throwing nine coffee berries into the grave, symbolizing his authority and continuity of leadership.
