A parish priest in the Soroti Catholic Diocese has died after sustaining serious injuries in a late-night road crash involving a stationary Fuso truck along the Soroti-Mbale road. Rev. Fr. Romanus Etwap, the Immaculate Conception Parish priest, died at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, where he had been rushed after the crash at Ajip at around 11:00 p.m.

According to eyewitnesses, Fr. Etwap was driving towards Soroti town when he attempted to overtake a trailer travelling in the same direction. He then collided with a stationary Fuso truck, registration number UBE 545G, which was parked by the roadside. One eyewitness said the priest may not have noticed the stationary truck because the road had become narrow after he overtook the trailer.

Joseph Ogole, a member of the Immaculate Conception congregation, said Fr. Etwap had left his residence on Wednesday morning in his Toyota Super Custom, registration number UAP 806S, to collect gifts from the Busia border. “We received information around 11 p.m. that he had been involved in an accident. When we rushed to the scene, we found that he had collided with the Fuso. We managed to rush him to the hospital, but he died hours later,” Ogole said.

Police have impounded the Fuso truck, while both vehicles involved in the crash have been towed to Soroti Central Police Station as investigations continue. Fr. Etwap’s body has been transferred to Bethesda Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination. Police had not issued an official statement on the incident by the time of filing this report-URN.
