The Kings Death: Crowds Gather at Tooro Palace for Food

As the mourning period for the late King of Tooro, His Majesty Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, continues, hundreds of city residents are gathering around the royal palace every afternoon, turning the solemn occasion into a busy social scene.

The large crowds, long queues and organized meal distribution have drawn attention not only to the cultural significance of the mourning rituals but also to growing tensions over the food being provided to mourners. Every afternoon, hundreds of mourners, including children, youth and adults of different ages, flock to the palace compound to partake in the traditional offering of meals.

Many arrive as early as 11 a.m., anticipating the timing of lunch or supper, while others wait patiently in line for hours before they are served. The crowds can become so large that organizers deploy scouts and Girl Guides to categorize and manage people according to age and physical size. Once the serving tables are cleared, mourners leave the palace hill in organized lines, heading back into town.

The wait can stretch for up to two hours, occasionally creating tensions that require the intervention of police and UPDF personnel to maintain order as the crowds swell and tempers rise. Amid the large gatherings, reports have circulated that General Muhoozi Kainerugaba offered to cover the cost of food for the mourners.

The reports have, however, triggered complaints from some people who say they received inadequate portions. Geoffrey Byamukama, who was at the palace on Tuesday for lunch, said he was disappointed after waiting in the queue for about an hour, only to receive what he considered an insufficient portion.

“We are told Gen. Muhoozi gave us food, but it looks like this hotel is cheating us,” he lamented loudly. But Robert Mugabe, a resident of Mt. Karukoto, says that while mourners may expect better portions, the meals are helping many people living near the palace who often struggle to afford a daily meal.

However, Mugabe rejects the suggestion that people are attending the mourning ceremonies solely because of the food. He says mourning does not necessarily require everyone to remain at the palace throughout the day. For many, the mourning ritual remains an important symbol of respect for the late King.

At the same time, the gatherings have also highlighted the social and resource dynamics within the community, particularly the challenge of providing meals for the large numbers of people attending the ceremonies. Kasaija Ernest Kusemerera, who is in charge of the Omukama’s local security, known as the Omukumirizi, says providing food for mourners is deeply rooted in Tooro culture and remains an important part of funeral ceremonies.

Richard Rwabuhinga, who heads the local organising committee, has also previously appealed to the people of Tooro to support the Kingdom with resources, citing the large number of people who have to be fed during the mourning period-URN.
