Brian Masereka, a nursing officer at St Joseph Clinic in Kibaale, Mugoye Sub-county, Kalangala District, is on the run for allegedly procuring an abortion for a 16-year-old Senior Two student.
Masereka allegedly performed the abortion over the weekend, and the victim developed severe post-abortion complications, including heavy bleeding, and collapsed after returning home.
Twaha Kasirye, the Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson, says the victim, who is currently receiving treatment at Kalangala Health Centre IV, told police that Masereka performed the abortion with the assistance of her elder sister.
Kasirye says the girl’s father reported the matter to the Community Health Worker after noticing unusual symptoms, prompting police to intervene.
He indicates that police have since arrested Geoffrey Muhangizi, 21, who is accused of impregnating the student, while efforts are underway to apprehend her sister, Oliva Natukunda, and Masereka, who are accused of conspiring to procure the abortion.
Kasirye says police are also intensifying efforts to combat what he describes as the widespread sexual violation and exploitation of girls in the area.
Records from the Kalangala District Police Child and Family Protection Unit indicate that the area registers at least 10 cases of sexual offences against young girls every month.
