Race the Nile Ultra to Promote West Nile Tourism Through Cycling

Up to 50 cyclists are expected to take part in the inaugural Race the Nile Ultra 2026, an 800-kilometre cycling event that organisers hope will help open up West Nile to international tourism while creating opportunities for communities along the route. The five-day race, scheduled for November, will be self-supported, meaning cyclists will arrange their own food, accommodation, supplies and bicycle repairs instead of relying on support teams from the organisers.

Organisers say this model is designed to ensure that money spent by participants reaches local communities, including accommodation providers, food vendors, traders and bicycle mechanics.

Lilian Ajarova, the brain behind Race the Nile, says information on accommodation, towns, trading centres and villages along the route has already been collected and will be provided to cyclists to help them plan their journey.

She says the organisers want participants to interact with communities rather than simply pass through the region.

“The race will be self-supported, meaning cyclists will be expected to obtain food, supplies and other services from communities along the route by themselves,” Ajarova said.

Cyclists will also be expected to seek assistance from local repairers and mechanics if their bicycles develop mechanical problems, instead of receiving technical support from the race organisers.

Ajarova says the approach is intended to create opportunities for local communities, particularly women, youth and other vulnerable groups, by encouraging cyclists to spend directly on locally available goods and services.

The model, however, also puts to the test whether communities along the 800-kilometre route have the accommodation, transport, food and technical services required to support an international cycling event.

Ajarova says the race is part of a wider effort to promote West Nile as a tourism destination, arguing that the region has diverse cultures, food traditions, landscapes and wildlife that remain largely underexposed to international visitors.

She says cycling provides an opportunity to bring tourists into communities and attractions that may not ordinarily form part of conventional tourism itineraries.

The organisers are also linking the race to wildlife conservation, with the main prize being an opportunity for the winner to name one of the white rhinos at Ajai Wildlife Reserve.

Ajarova says the prize is intended to draw attention to the reserve and the region’s wildlife as part of the tourism experience. The conservation element gives the race another dimension beyond sport, as organisers seek to connect visitors to West Nile’s wildlife and natural landscapes.

However, the extent to which the event can contribute to conservation will depend on whether increased tourism translates into actual visits, revenue or other support for wildlife conservation.

This is particularly relevant for Ajai Wildlife Reserve, which the organisers hope to showcase alongside the communities and landscapes along the cycling route.

Isaac Mulindwa from UZA, the event organisers, says West Nile has lagged behind other tourism destinations partly because of inadequate infrastructure and limited accommodation facilities.

He says the self-supported format means cyclists do not have to depend on high-end hotels because they will be expected to use accommodation and other services available within the communities they pass through. Mulindwa says the event is expected to create opportunities for thousands of people through the interaction between cyclists and communities along the route.

Participants will pay 270 Euros, which Mulindwa says covers medical and monitoring requirements.

The participation fee also raises questions about accessibility, particularly for Ugandan cyclists, and whether the event will primarily attract international visitors with the purchasing power to participate in an ultra-distance race.

The organisers say the race is nevertheless intended to create a tourism product that benefits more than the cyclists themselves by directing their spending into communities along the route.

Part of the route will follow the River Nile, including the section between Pakwach and Nimule, exposing participants to the river landscape as they travel through West Nile.

Ajarova says the November timing was selected after consultations with international cyclists to avoid clashes with other major cycling events on the international calendar.

She hopes Race the Nile will eventually become a platform for promoting Uganda’s tourism potential internationally and attracting more visitors to West Nile.

The bigger test for West Nile will be whether the five-day race can turn 50 cyclists into a meaningful source of income for local businesses while also drawing greater attention to West Nile’s cultural, natural and wildlife attractions-URN.
