A worrying rise in suicide cases and teenage pregnancies has sparked concern among religious, civic and government leaders in Kasese District, with calls for urgent action to protect vulnerable young people. The concerns were raised during a review of the South Rwenzori Diocese’s 10-year Strategic Development Plan held in Kasese Municipality, where leaders warned that increasing emotional distress among young people and weakening community support systems are fueling the twin crises.

Bishop Rt. Rev. Nason Baluku said Bukonzo East has recorded a disturbing increase in suicide cases, particularly among young people struggling with emotional and psychological challenges. He said many youths are battling personal difficulties without receiving the support they need from their families and communities.

The Diocese also expressed concern over the growing number of teenage pregnancies, especially in Busongora North. Moses Bajwaha, a social worker, said more than 1,200 girls in Kasese Municipality became pregnant over the past year, describing the figure as evidence of failing social protection systems for children and adolescents. He warned that the trend threatens the district’s future workforce and development if left unchecked.

To address the challenge, the South Rwenzori Diocese has established skilling centres across several constituencies to equip young people with vocational and life skills aimed at improving their livelihoods and reducing vulnerability to early pregnancies. Bishop Baluku said the initiative seeks to empower young people to become self-reliant, make informed life choices and contribute positively to their communities.

Kasese Deputy Resident District Commissioner Lt. Maate Magwara said the district is working closely with the High Court in Kasese to ensure those responsible for teenage pregnancies and defilement are prosecuted. He urged residents to promptly report cases to local authorities, saying community vigilance is essential in protecting children and addressing the growing social challenges.Magwara said collaboration between the church, government and communities will be critical in reversing the rise in suicides and teenage pregnancies and restoring hope among young people in Kasese District-URN.
