More than 50 business buildings are under lock and key in Bunyangabu District as authorities intensify enforcement against businesses operating without toilet facilities. The crackdown, launched on Wednesday, is part of a district-wide sanitation campaign aimed at improving hygiene standards and preparing some town councils for possible elevation to municipality status.
Several businesses were locked after operators failed to install toilet facilities despite earlier warnings from authorities. Bunyangabu District LC V Chairperson Peter Musinguzi said all town councils have been directed to inspect businesses and ensure sanitation requirements are met. He said the growing population in urban centres requires proper planning and basic facilities such as toilets.
Musinguzi added that town councils are also enforcing the new trade order requiring business operators to operate only from gazetted areas.
Christopher Kisembo, the District Health Inspector, said poor sanitation remains a challenge in some communities, prompting authorities to take stricter measures. He said some residents still lack access to proper sanitation facilities, with some resorting to unsafe practices such as using polythene materials.
James Mpanga, the Town Clerk of Rwimi Town Council, said businesses will continue operating as traders are given time to put in place proper facilities before August.
Meanwhile, Musinguzi said increasing urbanisation and population growth have pushed more than four town councils in the district to seek elevation to municipality status. He said the district is currently awaiting approval from the Ministry of Local Government-URN.
