Police in Mbale City are investigating the death of a 16-year-old Mbale High School student who was found hanging at her home in Industrial Division. The deceased has been identified as Catherine Nelima, a Senior Three student and resident of Bukisukye Lower Cell, Bumutoto Ward.

According to police, the incident is believed to have occurred on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at an unknown time during the day. Preliminary reports indicate that the girl’s mother, Jennifer Kanyunyuzi, 39, a businesswoman, left home for work, leaving Nelima and other children at the residence. It is alleged that upon returning home at around 5:00 p.m., the mother found the other children had gone to neighbouring homes.

When she checked her bedroom, she reportedly discovered her daughter hanging from a piece of mosquito net. Officers from the Homicide Unit and Scene of Crime officers attached to Mbale Central Police Station responded to the scene and conducted examinations. The body was later conveyed to Mbale City Mortuary for a post-mortem to establish the exact cause of death.

Elgon Region Police spokesperson Rogers Taitika confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing. “We urge members of the public, especially parents, guardians, and schools, to remain vigilant about the mental health and well-being of children. Anyone with information that may assist investigations should report to Mbale Central Police Station,” Taitika said-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
