Lydia Wanyoto the new woman MP for Mbale city has expressed doubts that the NRM CEC sat recently and endorsed speaker Anita Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa to get a second term without anyone being allowed to express interest from within the NRM caucus for the 12th parliament.
Wanyoto who was a CEC member and leader of NRM women league for 10 years up to 2025, says she knows how CEC operates. She says when such a resolution is taken the president orders secretary general Richard Todwong to put it in writing and ask Emmanuel Ddombo to make a press release and send it to all media houses.
On Saturday on capital gang, Wanyoto, who wants to stand for one of the two positions saying this is what many NRM cadres are asking her to do, wondered why the CEC resolution was only being reported on social media and not that prominently in the mainstream media. She challenged the media reporters to ring Todwong or Ddombo to confirm if there is such a resolution by CEC.
She said it’s wrong for CEC to just decide on such a sensitive matter so prematurely when some of the interest groups have not completed voting their reps for example the persons with disability. She said the matter should wait because every MP has a right to stand for the two positions and yet by the time the said CEC meeting happened the UPDF MPs, workers and youths hadn’t yet been elected.
Wanyoto, who says she has been in NRM longer than Tayebwa and Among, said there is no need for CEC bosses to rush because this isn’t an emergency and that the NRM caucus must be consulted because the views of all NRM members in the 12th parliament are very important because those are the people whoever becomes speaker or deputy will be working with under the legislature.
Wanyoto said no one should be intimidated not to express interest in the position of speakership simply because they are new and in their first term as MPs under the 12th parliament. She said Museveni personally defended Anita Among to stand against Kadaga for the CEC position and he made it clear that being new in NRM or parliament wasn’t a problem to be used to stop people from competing.
But back home in Mbale, people are scared that Lydia Wanyoto will properly be destroyed in case she continues to be seen as trying to stand in the way for Anita Among who these days is a very powerful person. Even on the Saturday capital gang, the moderator warned her to be careful because Anita Among is a very powerful person.
Other people on the show like Abdul Katuntu and Katana of NUP asked Wanyoto to explain why she never raised a finger when the same CEC dictatorship was being used to declare Museveni the sole candidate for NRM on presidency the way Anita Among is being declared now.
