In what could have seemed like a coincidence, the weather was gloomy on the morning of Wednesday, 22 April 2026 as lawmakers and staff of Parliament paced up and down in a somber mood in preparation for the arrival of the remains of the late Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament (MP), Hon. Helen Nakimuli.

Nakimuli died on 19 April 2026 in a private hospital in Kampala.

Speaker Anita Among and her Deputy, Thomas Tayebwa together with the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, Government Chief Whip, Hon.Hamson Obua, the Third Deputy Prime Minister and Minister without Portfolio, Hon. Rukia Nakadama, and several MPs received Nakimuli’s remains at 10:00am at Parliament’s South wing parking.

Before that, the arrival of Nakimuli’s father, a priest of the Orthodox Church, Reverend Father Christopher Walusimbi, together with close family members visibly left mourners in a moment of sympathy.

LOP Ssenyonyi (R) with the Government Chief Whip, Hamison Obua.

The late MP who was a devoted sportswoman, captained the Parliament Women’s Volleyball team, played netball and basketball. As such, the hearse that transported her remains was escorted by the sports fraternity who mounted a guard of honour from the Parliament main gate.

Majority of mourners dressed in black, thronged the Parliament foyer, where Nakimuli’s remains lie in state for viewing and many could not hold back their tears.

Nakimuli was a humble but audible voice – MPs

Speaker Among and Deputy, Tayebwa, took time to condole with Nakimuli’s close family members, before signing the condolence book.

The world would have never guessed that Nakimuli’s last appearance for a plenary sitting would be on 15 April 2026, wherein she challenged the Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang to ensure that Uganda is ready to co-host the 2027 African Cup of Nations.
“We have a deadline of August; Confederation of African Football officials are coming back in August- you have said, government will do this and that, have you given us a deadline on when you will be ready. Will this time be enough, especially in Hoima stadium?” Nakimuli asked then.

MPs and staff from the different sports teams walk alongside the hearse carrying the body of Nakimuli

Nakimuli, will return to the House later on in the afternoon2:00pm, only this time, she will lie lifeless in a casket and legislators will pay tribute to her.
