A 35-year-old woman is in police custody in Moroto District in connection with the death of her husband in Tapac Sub-county. The deceased has been identified as Mark Lolem, 37, a resident of Lonyilik Village, where the incident occurred in the early hours of September 23, 2026.
The woman, Maria Aleu, was arrested after she reportedly told the deceased’s father that she had found her husband hanging inside their room at about 7:00 am. Police responded to the scene and documented the incident before recovering the body.
Mike Longole, the Mt Moroto Regional Police spokesperson, confirmed that Aleu is in custody to assist with investigations. Longole said a case of suspected murder by strangulation has been registered at Moroto Central Police Station. The body was conveyed to Moroto Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death.
Police said preliminary information indicates that the couple had been experiencing domestic wrangles before the incident. “We call upon couples to always seek guidance from local leaders and family rather than resorting to violence. Investigations are ongoing,” Longole said.
The incident comes amid concerns from some men in Karamoja about domestic violence against men, with some saying they are reluctant to report abuse because existing support systems are perceived to focus mainly on women and children.
Police acknowledge that men can also be victims of domestic violence but say such cases are rarely reported.
