Police in West Nile are investigating the circumstances under which a 53-year-old Ugandan charcoal dealer was shot dead in South Sudan by suspected members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO).

The deceased has been identified as Suleiman Kamuli, a resident of Bulaga village in Wakiso District, who frequently conducted business in South Sudan. According to police reports, the incident occurred on April 28, 2025.

Two other Ugandan nationals who were with him managed to escape the attack unharmed. The body of the deceased was successfully recovered on April 29, 2025, by relatives, friends, and business associates who braved a risky 50-kilometer journey across the porous border to retrieve it.

A postmortem examination was conducted, and the body was handed over to the family for transportation back to Wakiso District for burial. Asea Collins, the acting Police Spokesperson for the West Nile region, confirmed the incident.

He said a case of cross-border murder by shooting has been opened at Koboko Central Police Station under reference number DEF 03/2025. He added that Ugandan authorities are engaging their South Sudanese counterparts to seek clarity and pursue justice over the killing-URN.
