Members of Parliament from West Nile, under their umbrella body of West Nile Parliamentary Caucus, have urged government to fulfil promises made to the region and implement development plans that have already been approved.

According to the MPs, several development plans approved by parliament and other government bodies remain unimplemented, even after funds have been allocated in the national budget.

They cited plans to improve condition of major roads in West Nile, like Nebbi to Arua, upgrade Arua Airfield to international standards and construct recreational facilities, including Inzikuru Stadium, also known as Barifa Stadium, in Arua City.

Hassan Kaps Fungaroo, the chairperson of West Nile Parliamentary Caucus and MP for Obongi County, said it was important for government to actualise its plans and promises through implementation so that work can begin on projects that have remained unfulfilled.

During a thanksgiving ceremony organised by Arua Central Division MP, Muzaid Khemis, West Nile MPs committed to working as a team to raise a joint voice for the region and ensure that government takes action to fulfil its pledges.

Muzaid observed that some projects fail to take off despite having budget allocations. He said that the caucus would follow up with different government offices to ensure that projects for which funds have already been allocated are implemented and work begins.

Zombo District Woman MP, Topista Acamfua, called for unity and collaboration among MPs from the region with other stakeholders to ensure successful implementation of programmes for the region.

Among other issues, the legislators raised concerns about composition of cabinet and technical teams in different ministries, including the positions of Permanent Secretaries, saying that people from West Nile are not adequately represented in these positions.

However, they commended President Museveni for his recent appointments, in which some MPs from the region were appointed as State Ministers in six ministries, as well as to parliamentary committee chairperson and deputy chairperson positions but they continue appealing for the appointment of a cabinet minister from West Nile-URN.
