In the past few days, the NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi has come under a lot of pressure from influential leaders and mobilizers in Kawempe south imploring him to front Dr. Shamim Nambasa to become their new MP who can wipe away tears put in their faces by Kazibwe Bashir.
Since her days at Makerere, where she was the guild president vaccinating the junta up to 2022, Nambasa who originates from Kasese, has been very outspoken and active in anti-regime protests.
Last year she was one of the youth leaders who demonstrated against corruption and demanded resignation of leaders at parliament. She talks well and is now a more recognized face on TV than Kazibwe Bashir or any other member of parliament in the NUP caucus.
She is already campaigning to become lord councillor for Kawempe south on the NUP ticket. The area she has been campaigning in to become councillor for is the same area in size which the Kawempe south MP represents. This is why voters have seen her potential and they think she can make a better MP than Fred Nyanzi even though she is still young and barely 26 years old.
Inside sources say that Kyagulanyi is seriously considering this request by Kawempe residents and hasn’t ruled out directing the NUP electoral commission to give the Kawempe south ticket to Nambasa who is his personal friend and a young girl that is very loyal and respectful to him as a father figure.
She has also previously been entrusted with some of the party’s ATM cards for the bank, to facilitate youth mobilisation activities, and she turned out to be a good steward. Not even a coin has got lost under her care. Last month she stood for the NEC position of being the NUP secretary in charge of youth affairs at the NUP delegates conference but she was defeated by Kasanda south MP Frank Kabuye because majority voters were his fellow MPs.
Kyagulanyi has been advised to see the Kawempe south MP ticket as a perfect chance to reward and console Nambasa since some of her supporters are beginning to become disappointed because the top leadership betrayed and sacrificed her in favor of little known Frank Kabuye.
Should Kyagulanyi make up his mind in favor of his loyal follower Shamim Nambasa, his own brother Fred Nyanzi, who has been campaigning for the same Kawempe MP seat, will end with nothing.
Sources say that Kyagulanyi is beginning to realize that Nyanzi has become too much damaged by the Latif Sebaggala claims and its better to give the Kawempe south MP ticket to someone else to save the party’s image.
In case it’s not Shamim Nambasa, sources say that some of the anti-Nyanzi big men at Kavule are considering to front Makindye mayor Hajji Ali Mulyanyama Nganda for the Kawempe south MP seat. He is a Muslim with many wives and homes, including one in Kawempe south which can become the base for his campaigns. His removal from Makindye west enables Kyagulanyi to reward his other loyal follower David Musiri who wants to replace Allan Sewanyana.
