Vendors and members of the business community in Onduparaka, Arua City, have reason to celebrate following the launch of a UGX 1.6 billion modern market construction project. The long-awaited development promises to transform Onduparaka market, which has been in a dilapidated state for over 15 years.
The market, located on a two-acre piece of land adjacent to the Ayivu Division headquarters, has long been a scene of hardship, with vendors operating from bare ground and struggling with poor sanitation and garbage accumulation.
Thanks to funding from the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), a modern two-block facility complete with an annex, store, and sanitary amenities will be constructed by Ashanti Business Services Uganda Ltd. The project is scheduled to be completed within six months.
During the official handover of the site to the contractor on Monday—witnessed by hundreds of vendors—the Resident City Commissioner for Arua, Salim Komakech, urged the contractor to ensure high construction standards.
Komakech also emphasized the need to use local labour from Arua City and called for a cordial relationship between the contractor and the community to ensure a successful project.
Marlon Avutia, the Ayivu Division Mayor, praised UNCDF for financing the project, noting that the new market would not only uplift the area’s image but also improve the livelihoods of residents.
He pledged to closely monitor the construction process to ensure quality work is delivered.
Brian Drileonzi, the Assistant Town Clerk for Ayivu Division, echoed similar sentiments.
He said the local leadership expects value for money and timely delivery of the project, and he encouraged cooperation from community members.
Charles Omona, the Supervising and Arua City Engineer overseeing the project, said the market should be ready for commissioning by January 8, 2026.
Meanwhile, James Amuru, the lead engineer from Ashanti Business Services, assured stakeholders that the company is committed to delivering a standard and durable market structure for the people of Ayivu.
However, a warning was issued by the LC I Chairperson of Onduparaka Cell, who spoke in Lugbara Ti, cautioning the contractor and workers against immoral conduct in the course of their engagement with the local community.
The new market is expected to significantly improve the business environment in Onduparaka, offering vendors safer, cleaner, and more dignified working conditions.
