The Uganda Wildlife Authority-UWA has lunched investigations into the death of three sub-adult lions in Queen Elizabeth National park.
According to a statement from the communications office at UWA, the incident was detected on Thursday using EarthRanger Technology, where a UWA team guided by satellite signals from a collared lion, moved into Akabale area in Nyamugasani in Kasese district after observing unusual movement patterns.
The dead include; two males and one female.
According to a statement released by the UWA Assistant Commissioner Communications, Bashir Hangi, during follow up searches, the team found a cow carcass within the same area, with a section of the carcass placed in a bag containing unknown substance while the remaining part was left exposed. Additional items, including a panga and slippers were also found near the carcass.
“These findings form a central part of the ongoing investigation into the cause of death of the lions and identification of those involved with a view of prosecuting them.” Hangi said in a statement.
He added that the conservation body has notified the police in Kasese and the matter in now under investigations but urges the public to support Uganda’s conservation efforts by being vigilant and reporting any suspicious activities that may endanger wildlife.
