A section of paternal uncles to the children of the late Naphtali Mugeni Ouma (Omutabona) has publicly apologised for blocking the decent burial of their mother.
The 62-year-old Esther Nafula died at Buyinja Health Centre IV in Namayingo on February 8th, 2026 after a long battle with cancer.
Her children accused some of their paternal uncles of attacking and harassing them on the evening of February 13th, 2026 demanding that Nafula be buried in the gazetted Abatabona Clan cemetery in Bulanga Village, Lunyo Sub-county.
This happened the same day they had brought her body home from the mortuary to Busohoni Village.
The incident prompted the children, led by their eldest son Micheal Kubengi, to file a miscellaneous application at Busia Chief Magistrate’s Court seeking permission to bury their mother at her matrimonial home in Busohoni Village.
In their application, they accused their paternal uncles — Frankline Onyango, Charles Ouma Okello Okumu, and Wafula Harison Ouma — of blocking them from exercising their rights and fulfilling the deceased’s wish.
Busia Grade One Magistrate Specioza Avako ruled in their favour and issued a court order allowing the burial to proceed in line with their mother’s wishes.
Prisca Adongo, one of the daughters, said during the burial that they have repeatedly suffered mistreatment from their paternal uncles and now seek support from authorities to secure letters of administration over their parents’ property.
Sylvia Natocho, another eldest daughter, said their paternal uncles have denied them their rights since the death of their father, Mugeni Naphtali Ouma, last year.
Issa Wanga, the Abatabona Clan spokesperson who attended the burial, publicly apologised and called for reconciliation among the family.
Nafula was buried under Born Again rites at Christ Alive Church, where she had been fellowshipping.
Bishop Victor Wanyama Kwedende, overseer of Christ Alive Ministries in Busia, urged the children to remain united and stay on the right path.
She was laid to rest on Saturday at her matrimonial home in Busohoni Village amid heavy security, with the Police Field Force Unit (FFU) and soldiers deployed to ensure a peaceful send-off.
