The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has engaged Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the grain milling sector in the Bugisu sub-region, emphasizing the importance of adhering to standards and obtaining product certification.
The engagement, held on Tuesday at Mbale Resort Hotel in Mbale City, brought together SMEs involved in grain milling for training on UNBS processes, food standards, and the certification procedures required for market compliance.
Sylvia Kirabo, the UNBS spokesperson, said the initiative aims to ensure that food products manufactured by local SMEs are safe for human consumption and meet the necessary quality standards.
Kirabo further noted that the engagement aligns with the ongoing presidential directive on value addition for Ugandan products. She said UNBS is committed to equipping SMEs with the skills and knowledge they need to comply with standards and thrive in both local and export markets.
Justine Mukazungu, the Director of Stina Foods Limited, which manufactures composite flour for children and adults, welcomed the training. She applauded UNBS for opening regional offices, which she said has simplified the product certification process for SMEs across the country.
The engagement is part of a broader effort by UNBS to strengthen food safety and support value addition initiatives, in line with Uganda’s industrialization and export promotion agenda-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
