Two people have drowned while attempting to fix a water pump in a deep underground well in Bifuma LC1, Mityana District.
The deceased have not yet been formally identified, although they are locally known by the names “Rasta” and “Brown Rogers.”
The incident occurred at the residence of Mohammed Bamulanzeeki at Bifuma village in Kakindu Sub County where the two men were reportedly repairing a water pump installed inside the deep well.
According to Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson, one of the men, identified by the nickname “Rasta,” first descended into the well to fix the pump but reportedly ran short of breath due to inadequate oxygen.
Kigozi said the Kakindu Police Station was immediately alerted by LC1 Chairperson, James Ssemango.
Police at Kakindu were later reinforced by officers from Mityana Police and the Wamala Regional Fire and Rescue Services team.
The Regional Fire and Rescue team successfully retrieved the bodies from the well. They were subsequently taken to Mityana General Hospital for postmortem examinations.
Kigozi said the identities of the deceased remain unclear because their employer had not presented them to local leaders for profiling. Investigations are ongoing into the incident-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
