Over the weekend, a group of Buganda elders went to Magere and had dinner with Robert Kyagulanyi and even prayed for him on the eve of his first day of campaigning for presidency against president Museveni.
Much as Kyagulanyi got the photo opportunity and used the photos and videos to psychologically motivate and reenergize his increasingly exhausted supporters and foot soldiers across the country, there isn’t much Museveni can be sleepless about regarding those photos.
Ex-Katikkiro Mulwanyamuli who led the team has been at it since the year 2011 when he formed Ssuubi 2011 and backed Col Kizza Besigye.
He moved around Buganda decampaigning Museveni, his old friend and OB but it ended in tears.
He is not someone Museveni can be afraid of because in 2016 he backed Mbabazi who was the go-forward candidate. It still ended in tears as Mbabazi badly flopped and trailed behind Museveni and Besigye.
In 2021, he still backed the same Kyagulanyi. Mulwanyamuli also backed Gilbert Bukenya who betrayed him and rejoined Museveni as he prepared for 2016 campaigns under TDA, to which Mulwanyamuli subscribed. On all those occasions, Museveni proved that he can do without having Mulwanyamuli on his side.
The other members of the elders delegation are the same old timers who have always been hostile to Museveni. Oweek Israel Mayengo has always been a disgruntled old man who has never been part of Museveni’s campaign team in Buganda save for during the bush war when he supported him.
Mayengo has been angry about failure to recover a commercial building government had allowed him to have on Kampala Road.
He sometime back engaged with general Salim Saleh but their meeting didn’t end well. No fences were mended, instead the rift between them grew only wider. They walked out on each other without saying good bye.
Dan Mulika, another old man and former Katikkiro who replaced Mulwanyamuli at Bulange, is a fault finder who has always been against Museveni all his entire life and he is the type who will end up finding fault and criticizing Kyagulanyi for being unserious.
That was the case during the CA days when he mobilized against pro-Museveni positions and as Katikkiro, he rolled the red carpet to welcome and receive Kizza Besigye at Bulange during the campaigns of 2006.
That day people were shot and boda riders died as a result of Mulika’s reckless decision to receive Besigye and allow him to address a rally inside Bulange. Captain Magara, a UPDF soldier, who was attached to the office of RDC Rubaga shot at the crowd and in the end, he was charged with murder.
