Seven suspects have escaped from police detention at Rubanda Police Station in Rubanda District.
The escapees have been identified as: Junior Akansasira, Dismas Biryomumeisho, Ivan Kanyesigye, Anthony Turihohabwe, Emmanuel Tumuhimbise, Aaron Taremwa, and Paulino Shabaruhanga. The group broke out of custody on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at around 3:30 p.m.
Three of the suspects were being held on allegations of simple robbery, three on theft, and one on domestic violence.
A police officer at the station, who spoke on condition of anonymity, says the incident began when Police Constable Naboth Erou, who was on duty as the cell guard, opened the cell for Turihohabwe to speak with a relative.
While Erou was escorting Turihohabwe back to the cells, Taremwa allegedly pushed the officer, causing him to fall.
Taremwa then fled, and the other suspects followed. One suspect, whose name was not disclosed, remained in custody and did not attempt to escape.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate confirms the incident, saying that Constable Erou has already been arrested for allegedly aiding the escape. He adds that other officers who were found absent from duty at the time have also been arrested for neglect of duty.
Maate urges the public to immediately report to authorities if they spot any of the escapees so that they can be re-arrested and charged accordingly.
This is not the first time suspects have escaped from Rubanda Police Station. In December 2024, fourteen suspects broke out at night after exploiting a crack in the detention centre wall and removing bricks to create an exit.
