The Anti-Stock Theft Unit –ASTU have recovered a stolen cow and arrested one suspect in the Nadunget cattle market, Moroto district.
The cow was recovered in an operation that was conducted on Monday in the market after the owner, Isaac Lochugae, identified it from the display, ready for sale.
The security quickly responded and arrested Mark Lomer, aged 27 years, a resident of Lokitelakapes village in Lotisan Sub County. The cow is believed to have been part of the cattle which were previously raided.
Mike Longole, the Mt Moroto regional police spokesperson, said that the successful recovery and the arrest of the suspect are part of their efforts to end the commercialised cattle theft in the region.
Longole noted that the suspect has been under investigation for having firearms and being involved in cattle rustling.
He also observed that the commercialised raids had been one of the major factors that used to fuel insecurity in the region until they introduced the idea of establishing security animal checkpoints and regulating livestock markets.
Longole reported that the solution has worked and it has drastically reduced the cases of animal theft in the region, and as a result, peace is gradually returning to normal. He added that the ASTU personnel shall remain deployed in each market to verify the animals brought for sale and regulate the movement of animals within and outside the region.
This successful operation demonstrates our commitment to addressing cattle rustling and recovering stolen livestock. We appreciate the collaboration of security agencies and the community in this effort’’ Longole said-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
