Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has paid tribute to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for ushering in peace and security in Uganda, noting that it has been instrumental in restoring wildlife populations such as rhinos.
She made the remarks at Parliament while meeting officials from the Ministry of Tourism and the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). The meeting coincided with the announcement of Parliament’s participation in Uganda’s first-ever Rhino Naming Ceremony, an initiative aimed at raising US$11 million (UGX 40 billion) to support rhino conservation efforts.
Among said the insurgencies of the 1980s had devastated Uganda’s tourism sector, leading to the near extinction of rhinos, but the country’s stability has allowed conservation programmes to thrive. The planned naming ceremony, she added, represents a major step toward mobilizing resources and awareness for the species’ protection and the broader tourism sector.
