Police in Soroti have arrested a laboratory technician at Asuret Health Centre III following allegations that he reported to work while under the influence of alcohol and assaulted a colleague.
Moses Asimwe was arrested on Thursday morning following an order by Yeko Bulubulu, the Soroti Resident District Commissioner, after he received a report of a disturbance at the health facility.
Bulubulu said a whistleblower alerted him to a commotion involving a member of the health centre staff.
He said he contacted the officer in charge of Asuret Police Post, who went to the facility and found Asimwe allegedly harassing colleagues in the presence of more than 30 patients.
Bulubulu said he then ordered the officer to arrest Asimwe to restore order at the health centre.
Bulubulu said patients at the facility identified midwife Sarah Ikiror as one of the staff members allegedly targeted by Asimwe.
He said Asimwe appeared to be under the influence of alcohol when he arrived at the facility and allegedly attempted to assault Ikiror.
Bulubulu also alleged that this was not the first time Asimwe had reported for duty while intoxicated. Police are taking statements from staff and other witnesses as investigations continue.
Asimwe remained in police custody by press time. URN was not allowed to talk to Asimwe to get his side of the story. We did not establish whether he has previously faced disciplinary action over alleged intoxication. The health centre has not yet publicly commented on the allegations, and it was not immediately clear whether Asimwe had responded to the accusations-URN.
