Soroti Regional Referral Hospital Radiographer, Robben Onyait, has been arrested for neglect of duty and alleged extortion.
Since last year, the hospital has received complaints of extortion from patients who claim that they are required to pay money to receive services.
Benzy Omoya, the hospital’s principal administrator, stated that the decision to hand over Onyait to the police followed complaints from seventeen patients.
“When the patients expressed their frustrations, the police intervened. We discovered that Onyait had been attending to different individuals who allegedly paid him money, neglecting those who had been waiting for hours, some even for three days, because they did not pay him,” he said.
Omoya added that they had warned Onyait multiple times, even reaching a point of counseling him, but he did not change his behavior. “This kind of behavior is tarnishing the image of the hospital, and we need the ministry to take action. The machines are functioning well; the issue lies with Onyait, who only collects records while attending to outside patients.” This incident reportedly marks the fifth attempt to arrest Onyait for alleged extortion.
Rev. John Peter Omudet from Obalanga Sub County in Kapelebyong District says that he visited the facility three times, traveling over 150 kilometers each time, but has never been attended to.
Peter Ariko from Aloet in Soroti District said that patients with money are attended to immediately, while those who have nothing are left without care for three days, waiting.”
Onyait is currently being held at Soroti Central Police Station (CPS), and investigations are ongoing-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
