Six suspects have been remanded to Mambugu Government Prison over the alleged murder of Bugwara Parish Chief Edger Kunihira and the theft of his smartphone in Kagadi District. The suspects appeared before the Kagadi Grade One Magistrate Edward Kayukyi on Tuesday, where they were charged with murder and aggravated robbery.
The accused have been identified as Matiya Basiima, 22, a boda boda rider from Mambugu Cell; Lawrence Mujuni of Kirongo Cell; Kwikiriza Mujuni, a boda boda rider from Mambugu Cell; Joseph Isingoma, 26, also a boda boda rider from Mambugu Cell; John Businge of Muhumbu Cell; and Sam Twesige of Kirongo Cell.
All six are residents of Kagadi Town Council. According to the prosecution, the suspects allegedly murdered Kunihira in September 2026 using a hoe before stealing his smartphone, valued at Shs 1.2 million. The accused were not allowed to enter pleas because the Grade One Magistrate’s Court lacks jurisdiction to try capital offences such as murder, which are handled by the High Court.
They were remanded until November 27, 2026, when they are expected to return to court. Kunihira served as the parish chief of Bugwara Parish in Kicucura Sub-County. He was also the son of former Kibaale District Chairperson Peter Amara.
Reports indicate that Kunihira’s body was found buried in his coffee plantation after his death. The circumstances surrounding the killing remain unclear. The case is expected to return to court on November 27, 2026, as investigations and legal proceedings continue-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
