Six police officers were injured and nine suspected assailants killed following Saturday morning’s foiled attacks on Kasese police barracks and Rughendabara police post. According to Kasese Resident District Commissioner, Lt Joe Walusimbi, a police constable was injured at the police post in Rughendabara while five others were injured at the police barracks in Kasese town.
He said four of the attackers were gunned down at Kasese police barracks, and another five were put out of action during the raid on the police post in Rughendabara. He added that 30 other suspected attackers from the two incidents have been arrested and will play a critical role in aiding investigations into the matter.
The attackers, who were armed with pangas, catapults, and stones, torched one uniport at the police barracks and caused extensive damage to another before being repulsed by the police personnel.
Walusimbi appealed to the people of Kasese to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies to help identify and bring to book any suspicious elements within their communities.
The attacks were seemingly coordinated, occurring around the same time at different locations—a replica of the 2014 coordinated attacks in Kasese, Ntoroko, and Bundibugyo.
