Osbert Byonanebye, a 23-year-old private security guard attached to Ruhaama Veterans Uganda Limited, is in trouble after reportedly losing his gun to unidentified thieves while on duty in Kabale District.
Byonanebye was deployed on night duty at Pearl Express Hotel, located along the Kabale–Mbarara Highway in Kigongi Main Street, Central Division, Kabale Municipality, when the incident occurred between Wednesday night and the early hours of Thursday.
According to Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, the theft happened at around 4:20 AM on Thursday morning when the guard allegedly fell asleep. The thieves took advantage of his inattentiveness and grabbed a SAR rifle, registration number 564210028-15120, along with two rounds of ammunition.
The suspects then fled towards the Rushaki area in Southern Division, Kabale Municipality. Byonanebye reportedly attempted to pursue the suspects but failed to apprehend them. He is currently on the run, and police have launched a manhunt both for him and for the suspects behind the theft.
Maate emphasized that investigations into the matter are ongoing and called on members of the public to remain vigilant. He urged anyone with information about persons found in illegal possession of firearms to alert the authorities.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in the district. In October 2012, another private security guard, Benon Ahimbisibwe of Kabale New Uganda Security Limited, lost a .303 rifle, number 7579, with ammunition while on duty at the Kigezi Dairy Corporation Milk Collection Centre. At the time, Ahimbisibwe had reportedly left his post to grab a quick drink at a nearby bar-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
