Security forces in Nabilatuk District have impounded 27 head of cattle suspected to have been stolen from Katakwi District. According to police, on 20th July 2026 at around 5:00pm, information was received at Moruangamion ASTU Zonal Headquarters about the theft of 5 head of cattle from Katakwi District.
A team of ASTU personnel commanded by AIP James Odio was immediately deployed to a known crossing point. The team linked up with UPDF forces who were also conducting tracking in the area. During the joint operation, security forces intercepted and impounded 27 head of cattle. The impounded animals are currently being held at Moruangamion ASTU Zonal Headquarters pending identification by their owners.
Mike Longole, the Mt. Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said the cows will be properly verified before being handed over to rightful owners.
”The cows were intercepted following reports of animal theft in Katakwi District. However, those that we find are not connected to the theft will be released after verification,” Longole said. He urged members of the public who have lost animals to report to Moruangamion ASTU Zonal Headquarters with proof of ownership.
”Joint security remains committed to fighting cattle rustling and cross-border animal theft in the Karamoja Sub-region, Sebei, Bugisu and Teso,” Longole added.
Nabilatuk District has often been accused of harboring warriors who terrorize communities in Napak and neighboring Katakwi District in Teso. The warriors often cross into these districts and steal cattle despite security deployments along major crossing points.
In June, joint security forces convened a peace dialogue in Napak District to discuss ways of dealing with individuals who have refused to hand over guns and are now terrorizing communities. Both leaders and security forces agreed to cooperate to ensure that all criminals are disarmed and removed from the community-URN.
