Security forces in Kasese on Friday cut off Mubuku town council and Majengo trading centre to prevent supporters of the National Unity Platform-NUP from entering Kasese town along with their party presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi.
Kyagulanyi is in Kasese district for his campaign for the upcoming presidential elections.
His arrival was met with tight security, with armed personnel deployed along the busy trading centres, was welcomed by hundreds of supporters at Rughendebara trading centre.
Despite these restrictions, he was warmly welcomed by hundreds of supporters at Rughendabara, Hima, Mubuku, Majengo, and Nyakasanga playground, where he is set to hold his first rally.
However, many of the supporters who had gathered to trail Kyagulanyi were stopped by security forces led by UPDF soldiers and police officers.
Only Kyagulanyi, his convoy in vehicles, and the press were permitted to Mubuku. A similar roadblock was set up at Majengo trading centre, where supporters attempting to proceed to Kasese town were also denied access.
The security measures appeared aimed at controlling the movement of supporters during the high-profile campaign, but party members say it was deliberate to block them from listening to the message of their candidate.
Kagulanyi is set to hold his first rally of the day in Kasese town before proceeding to Bwera. Kyagulanyih accused security forces of trying to frustrate his rallies by eploying heavily to scare away electorates from attending them.
