Thirteen students are among 15 people nursing injuries following an early morning road crash in Bugweri District that claimed the life of their bus driver. The accident occurred at about 4:45 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, at Nawangisa Village along the Mbale–Iganga Highway when an Isuzu bus, registration number UA551ED, rammed into the rear of a stationary Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer, registration number UBB269V.
The bus, owned by Amuria High School, was transporting 73 students from St. Paul Secondary School in Katakwi to Kasenyi Landing Site in Entebbe for a geography field study. Busoga East Regional Police Spokesperson Michael Kasadha said preliminary investigations indicate the bus had been travelling from Mbale when the crash occurred.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that at approximately 4:45 a.m., the bus was travelling from Mbale carrying 73 students en route to Kasenyi Landing Site in Entebbe for a geography tour. Upon reaching Nawangisa Village, the bus collided with a stationary trailer from the rear,” Kasadha said. The bus driver, identified as 68-year-old Kasakya Abdallah, died instantly.
“The bus driver died at the scene, and 15 occupants sustained injuries,” Kasadha added. The injured include students Iraat Joseph (Senior Three), Obweikal Emmanuel (Senior Three), Opio Samuel Martin (Senior Four), Ingirot John Martin (Senior Four), Emodit Simon (Senior Three), Aanyu Samuel (Senior Three), Oumo Jeremiah (Senior Four), Okurut Silver (Senior Three), Alibet Isaac (Senior Four), Oila Samuel (Senior Three), Okot Timothy (Senior Three), Ocen John Mark (Senior Three), and Nyasurura Perez (Senior Four). Also injured were teacher Oluga George and the bus conductor, whose identity had not yet been established.
Police said traffic officers led by the Regional Traffic Officer visited and documented the scene. “The deceased’s body has been transported to Iganga Hospital mortuary, while the injured victims have been taken to Iganga General Hospital for medical attention,” Kasadha said.
Both the bus and the trailer have been impounded at Busembatya Police Station pending mechanical inspection as investigations into the crash continue. Kasadha urged motorists to remain vigilant while using the roads. “We urge all road users to exercise caution while travelling to prevent such incidents,” he said-URN.
