Sanjay Tanna, the former Tororo municipality legislator, has declared his retirement from politics and rallied residents to support his son in the 2026 general elections.
Born on 27th April 1973, Sanjay Tanna, a Ugandan of Asian origin, served as the Tororo Municipality MP for two consecutive terms on the ruling NRM party card from 2006 to 2016. He is also one of the prominent entrepreneurs in Eastern Uganda.
In his address during the campaign launch of his son, Shyam Tanna, who is contesting for the parliamentary seat on an independent ticket at Lions Children’s Park in Tororo town on Tuesday, Sanjay said that he has grown old and it is high time to leave opportunities for youths to lead.
Sanjay Tanna, who withdrew from the NRM Central Executive Committee primaries, had previously backed the incumbent area legislator, Apollo Yeri Ofwono, during the 2021 elections. Now, he wants his son, Shyam Tanna, to use his new manifesto to fulfill developmental programs that he says he did not accomplish during his tenure in Tororo. Sanjay commended NRM’s Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for the good security that has enabled peace in the country.
Benard Ochieng, the NRM party flag bearer for mayorship in Tororo Municipality, said that the area needs a legislator who can work with local leaders to drive development. He noted major challenges, including non-functional street lights, poor road networks, and inadequate health service delivery, among other concerns that require an MP capable of lobbying effectively.
Shyam Tanna, said he will lobby for youth employment, demand improved health services, and enhance the education system, among other priorities.
Shyam also decried the defacing of his campaign posters and banners, an act he alleges was carried out by supporters of his opponents.
Other contestants for the MP seat in Tororo Municipality include Valentine Owor on the NUP ticket, and the incumbent NRM MP Apollo Yeri Ofwono, who also serves as area NRM party chairperson. Additional independent candidates are Edward Okware, Patrick Ochom, and Shyam Tanna. The Electoral Commission has scheduled both presidential and parliamentary elections for 15th January 2026.
