Police in Rukungiri District have summoned a health inspector attached to Rukungiri Municipal Council over allegations of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, following a complaint by a tailoring apprentice. The summons, issued by the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) at Rukungiri Police Station on June 16, 2026, requires Asimwe Evas to appear before the Officer in Charge of CID on June 18, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. to record a statement.
The case stems from a complaint filed by Ainembabazi Dorothy, a tailoring apprentice in Bunura Cell, Rukungiri Municipality. A viral TikTok video circulating on social media shows Evas Asiimwe allegedly pushing Ainembabazi out of a business premises where she is said to have been undertaking her apprenticeship.
It is further alleged that Asiimwe, together with Rukungiri Municipal Council enforcement officers, had gone to the premises to demand payment for garbage collection fees, but found the apprentice at the site instead of the business owner. Through her lawyers, Beacon Advocates, Ainembabazi alleges that on June 5, 2026, Asimwe assaulted, strangled, and humiliated her at her workplace.
The lawyers argue that the alleged actions violated her constitutional rights and caused her physical injury, emotional distress, humiliation, and reputational damage. They have demanded UGX 50 million in compensation for alleged human rights violations and emotional suffering, UGX 5 million in legal fees, and a written undertaking to prevent similar conduct in the future. The lawyers have warned that legal action will follow if the demands are not met within 14 days. Police say investigations into the matter are ongoing-URN.
