A couple died on the spot after two rolling stones crashed into their house in Kogorogoro Village, Nyakishana Sub-county, Buhweju District. The deceased have been identified as 40-year-old Deus Gumisiriza and his wife, Evalyne Nyamwiza.
According to Apollo Tayebwa, the Greater Bushenyi Region Police Spokesperson, the incident occurred at around midnight on Saturday, February 22, 2026, and has been described as a natural disaster. Preliminary findings indicate that earth tremors in the area caused two large stones to roll down from a nearby hill into the valley, crashing through the roof of the couple’s semi-permanent house and landing on their bed, killing them instantly while they slept.
Tayebwa said the couple’s six children, who were in a different room at the time, survived without injury. He added that postmortem examinations revealed Nyamwiza sustained fatal chest injuries, while Gumisiriza suffered severe abdominal injuries and an open compound fracture of the left arm.
Adriano Gasiirwe, Chairperson of Kogorogoro Village, said the stones that struck the house were from the couple’s garden and may have been loosened. “Gumisiriza had been digging around the stones, making them loose and susceptible to rolling downhill during earth tremors common in the rainy season,” he noted.
