Former MP and Vice President of the Democratic Party, Rainer Kafiiire, has died. Reports from Kibuku indicated that Kafiire, also one of the members of the Constituent Assembly, died on Wednesday, 3rd June. Her death was confirmed by multiple sources based in Kibuku and Pallisa. Former DP member Dr. Lulume Bayiga also confirmed the demise of Rainer Kafiire, who served in the Sixth and Seventh Parliaments of Uganda. She lost the election for her bid to the Eighth Parliament to Saleh Kamba.
“So sad that Hon Juliet Reiner Kafiire has passed on. She has been sick for some time, and I learned she would hardly recognize people in the latter months before her demise,” said Bayiga. Rainer Kafiire served as Vice President of the Democratic Party during the reign of the late John Sebaaan Kizito.
“She was a hardworking, change and hope creator, a leader who will always be remembered. I shared her sadness when DP was sacrificed in a Mbale conversation of DP members, dubbed a DP National Delegates Conference that set the dear Old Party for grabs by the NRM, and has never been recovered. Hon Kafiire fought a good fight. May Her Soul Rest in Eternal Peace,” said Bayiga.
Rainer Kafiire was one of the few women who belonged to the 68-member National Caucus for Democracy in the Constituent Assembly that made the 1995 constitution. The caucus headed by the late Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere and others mainly pushed for pluralism.
She was among the opposition figures who constantly battled against the monolithic Movement system. Article 269 of the 1995 constitution had barred the activities of political parties in Uganda. Kafiire always joined Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere, John Ssebaana Kizito, and Zachary Olum in constitutional court battles-URN.
