Kabale University celebrates with great pride the recognition of our Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joy C. Kwesiga, who was honored as one of the visionary founders of Action for Development (ACFODE) during the organisation’s 40th Anniversary celebrations. The award acknowledges her outstanding leadership, unwavering commitment to women’s empowerment and a lifelong contribution to gender equality in Uganda.

The anniversary ceremony, themed Celebrating 40 Years of Resilience, Transforming Lives and Recommitment to Gender Equality, brought together national partners, development agencies, civil society leaders and gender champions who have supported ACFODE’s mission throughout its four decades of impact. During this historic moment, Prof. Kwesiga was recognized for her central role in shaping the foundation of ACFODE and steering its agenda during the early years of Uganda’s women’s movement.

ACFODE has been instrumental in strengthening gender justice initiatives across the country since 1985, with notable achievements that include contributing to the 1994 constitution-making process, championing the establishment of the School of Women and Gender Studies, supporting the growth of women-led organisations and amplifying women’s voices through platforms such as the Women’s Page in the New Vision. The organisation has also extended its work to communities, establishing structures that promote gender-responsive development and creating a Peace Hub in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement to provide psychosocial support for displaced populations.

Kabale University values its long-standing partnership with ACFODE, including collaboration through the Blended Learning Solution to Advance Gender Equality in Education in Uganda project, which continues to strengthen inclusive learning and amplify women’s participation in education.

We extend heartfelt congratulations to Prof. Joy C. Kwesiga on this remarkable recognition. Her leadership remains an inspiration to the university community and the country, reinforcing Kabale University’s commitment to advancing gender equality, academic empowerment and transformative development.

Kabale University will continue to nurture collaborative efforts with partners like ACFODE, celebrating milestones that honor progress and propel even greater strides in women’s rights and social justice.
