President Yoweri Museveni has granted Madina Najjemba Amin, widow of former President Idi Amin Dada, a monthly allowance of 15 million shillings, along with a directive to build her a house and provide a 4×4 vehicle. This decision follows Najjemba’s appeal to the president for assistance.

In a letter dated November 9, 2023, and seen by URN, Museveni responded: “I have seen your letter of the 9th November, 2023. How are you? It is good that you wrote to me. By the copy of this letter, I direct the State House Comptroller to buy you a car (4×4), build you a house, ensure you get medical insurance, and give you an allowance of Shs. 15 million per month.”

Idi Amin seized power in Uganda in 1971 after a military coup that toppled Milton Obote. His eight-year rule remains infamous for widespread terror, lawlessness, and brutal repression under his regime. Although Amin was ousted in 1979 by Ugandan exiles backed by Tanzanian forces, many of his family members, including spouses and children, have faced hardships over the nearly four decades of President Museveni’s tenure.

Museveni’s generous support to Najjemba may come as a surprise to some, given his frequent condemnations of Idi Amin in public speeches. The president also raised questions about the former dictator’s entitlements, asking, “What happened to Idi Amin’s entitlements? Who took the money?” in his letter to Najjemba.

These questions highlight ongoing uncertainty about the status and management of any benefits or funds that were meant for Amin’s family, prompting speculation over who has received or currently benefits from these privileges-URN.
