In an effort to close health service delivery gap at Alito Health Centre III, Kapelebyong District, has identified a number of obstacles that must be tackled immediately and these include shortage of energy, inconsistitent water supply, lack of staff and inadequate infrastructure.
Alito Health Center had its status upgraded from H/CII to H/C III in July 2025, with a catchment area that includes Alito and adjacent sub counties.
According to Amos Omoding, facility in-charge, because of a lack of electricity in the facility, nurses at Alito Health Centre III have had to devise “creative” hand touches to aid deliver pregnant ladies. “Some mothers come prepared with small touches sold at 1000 shillings,” Omoding said, adding that insufficient personnel in Alito has been identified as a major barrier to health service delivery in the district.
The health center now has 8 employees, despite the fact that it is intended to have at least 18 health workers with support staff.
He emphasized the paucity of infrastructure, saying that available staff rent outside the facility, affecting timely reporting to work. He also stated that lack of borehole and tap water is one of the challenges that patients and staff face, since water is required for basic hygiene and sanitation.
Mary Christine Alado, a midwife at Alito Health Centre III, added her voice to the call to save mothers’ lives, revealing that often, they utilize touches to deliver mothers when solar lights fail, especially during rainy weather.
District chairman Francis Akorikin said during an inspection visit to the health facility on Thursday, that the district has been waiting for electricity power connectivity for a long time and hopes to employ more workers to solve manpower deficiencies.
Amidst government efforts to spread power across Uganda, Akorikin agrees that power is an issue that the government must solve, particularly for Kapelebyong.
Alito was created from Obalanga Sub County, while Acinga was formed from Acowa in the 2017/2018 fiscal year, however service delivery is still under consideration by the government.
