Pope Francis has been discharged from the hospital where after he was admitted five weeks ago .
Pope Francis aged 88 years was hospitalized at Gimeli hospital in Rome on 14th February this year and since then he has been undergoing treatment for pneumonia which is most serious health crisis of his 12-year papacy.
On Sunday, he made his first public appearance since he was hospitalized over the illness.
At around 2:15pm, Pope Francis emerged from the window of the hospital and waved to the cheering crowd of Catholics who had gathered outside.
The pope smiled, waved, and made a sign of a thumbs up at a group of well-wishers gathered outside below the hospital.
The pope, whose face looked swollen, appeared only for a few moments.
The Pope spoke briefly, with a feeble voice thanking one elderly woman among the crowd below, who had brought yellow flowers.
Later, a car carrying Francis left the hospital shortly after noon after he was discharged and was accompanied through Rome by a convoy of police vehicles.
He was driven back in his small Fiat car to his residence in Vatican palace as hundreds of Catholics wave to him on the roadside.
In the moments before the pontiff’s appearance on Sunday, the crowd of hundreds of well-wishers called out for the Pope, chanting “Francis, Francis, Francis”.
Pope Francis will need two months to rest so as to heal completely according to his doctors.
According to doctors ,the Pope is not yet completely healed but no longer has Pneumonia and is now in stable condition.
Pope will also need to re learn to speak after losing the voice.
Cardinal Victor Farnedez quoted by Reuters on Friday said that “high flow oxygen dries everything out” and as result Pope needs to relearn how to speak .
Dr Sergio Aliferi one of the Pope’s doctors was also quoted by BBC saying that patients with pneumonia lose their voice especially the elderly and it takes time for the voice to return to normal-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
