Police in Busoga North have retrieved the bodies of three people who drowned in Lake Nakuwa, Kaliro District, on Wednesday.
The victims are Elliot Mukulu, Emmanuel Waiswa and a teenager whose identities are not yet known. It is reported that the three were sailing on a boat while crossing from Panyolo A to Panyolo B. The boat, however, capsized midway.
Esther Nalyaka, a resident in the area, says that the bodies were retrieved on Thursday by the marine police and residents. Nalyaka says that they are currently mobilizing local divers to train all lake users on safety skills as a means of minimizing accidents on the water.
Laston Bagenyi, the LCII of Panyolo parish, says that, being a small lake, most fishermen are reluctant to adhere to the minimum safety standards, which often exposes them to water-related accidents.
Bagenyi says that, despite knowing the standard boats, most users along Nakuwa Lake always sail using small-sized boats, which is the main cause of drowning incidents.
Bagenyi has since challenged fishermen and other lake users to adhere to the minimum safety standards as a means of reducing the rate of accidents.
The Busoga North Police Spokesperson, Michael Kasadha, confirms the incident and rallies lake users to prioritize their safety at all times-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
