Police in Busoga North is investigating the killing of 83-year-old, Bernard Makoma, a resident of Nakabembe B village, in Irundu sub county, in Buyende district.
Makoma’s body was retrieved from his house by neighbours, who said he normally woke up early morning to do household chores, but they never saw him today, prompting them to forcefully open the door. His body lay in a pool of blood deep cuts in the head, neck, hands and other parts.
The deceased has been taken to Irundu health center IV mortuary for postmortem and final handover to the relatives for a decent sendoff.
The area L.C.1 chairperson, Hamza Tigawalana, raises suspicion that the attackers were intentional about killing Makoma, since they targeted the head, which is a critical part of one’s general wellbeing.
Tigawalana says that Makoma was living alone but he always interacted well with his neighbors, and there is no information about him having known enemies. Tigawalana wants police to extensively investigate the matter and ensure that suspects are arrested.
Maureen Kyakobye, a resident, says that Makoma was lying in a pool of blood, which cast them into grief, with some neighbours breaking down into bouts of uncontrolled mourning for the elder.
Kyakobye says that Makoma will be remembered as an outstanding man who continued to work for his livelihood, rather than relying on handouts. “His house is located on about two acres of land from where he has been growing food crops for both personal consumption and sale. He literally never ran out of supplies, which overly boosted his livelihood,” he says.
She adds that Makoma has been a great advisor to the younger generation, whom he engaged daily in progressive conversations during evening hours.
On his part, the Busoga North police spokesperson, Samson Lubega confirms the incident, noting that investigations are underway and their intelligence teams have been dispatched to ascertain the whereabouts of the suspects. He says they not only intend arrest suspects but also find out the intentions for killing an old man.
