Police in Bukwo District are hunting for a man who allegedly stabbed his wife to death during a domestic altercation. Fredmark Chesang, the Sipi Region Police Spokesperson, identified the suspect as Isaac Kauma, a resident of Chesower Village in Chesower Sub-county, Bukwo District. The incident occurred on the night of Sunday, June 1st.
Chesang explained that the suspect allegedly stabbed his wife, Benna Cherotich, 30, and a mother of two, during a quarrel at their home around 9:00 pm. “We are currently hunting for the suspect who is believed to be hiding inside Mt. Elgon National Park,” Chesang said. The body of the deceased was taken to Bukwo Hospital for postmortem.
An eyewitness, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said the confrontation began after Cherotich urged her husband to stop gambling and excessive drinking, particularly because he was failing to provide for the family. The husband reportedly stormed out to a nearby drinking joint and returned home intoxicated. A quarrel broke out soon after, escalating into a fatal stabbing.
“A few moments later, a fight erupted, which resulted in her death,” the witness narrated. Moris Kissa, the LC3 Chairperson of Chesower Sub-county, said reports suggest the suspect had spent the day drinking and gambling.
“This family has not been at peace for the past week. The man often returned home in the wee hours of the night, and when the wife confronted him, he was rude and failed to fulfil his responsibilities as the head of the family,” Kissa said.
Emily Chelangat, a health worker at Chesower Health Centre III, confirmed that Cherotich died from excessive bleeding. “She was brought in unconscious by neighbours around 11:50 pm. We tried our best as a medical team, but her condition was too critical to even refer her to Kapchorwa,” Chelangat said. Police continue to search for the suspect as investigations into the incident unfold
