Police in Butaleja District, with the help of the now-famous canine unit Vegas, have tracked down electricity vandals. Vegas was deployed after community members reported to the Chairperson of Lubanga Cell, Bufujja Town Council, on Sunday morning, December 14, 2025, that unknown individuals had vandalized electrical cables and stolen meters.
According to Moses Mugwe, the Bukedi South region police spokesperson, the matter was reported to Bufujja Police Station, prompting the Officer in Charge to request support from the K9 Unit. Mugwe said the territorial police in Butaleja are investigating a larger racket behind the vandalism.
He added that K9 Vegas successfully picked up a human scent, leading officers to a semi-permanent house belonging to Esero Fred, located about 500 meters from the crime scene. The suspect was not at home, and efforts to trace and arrest him are ongoing. A search of the premises resulted in the recovery of stolen cables, meters and several other electronic items.
