Voters and Political contenders in Bulambuli district have accused the police of negligence and abetting electoral related violence.
The claims arise from a clash that erupted on Sunday evening between supporters of the incumbent Member of Parliament for Elgon County Wamakuyu Ignatius Mudimi and his closest rival the National Resistance Movement flag bearer Moses Massa.
The clashes left several of Mudimi’s supporters in the parishes of Dooba, Gabusogololo in Nabiwutulu subcounty in Elgon North County injured and properties destroyed. According to the voters, the police is abetting the violence.
Wetaka Stephen, one of the injured victims of the violence claims that the he was attacked by the supporters of Massa who hacked him. He says during the attack, the attackers questioned him why he was supporting Mudimi.
According to him, on Monday he reported the case at Buluganya Police Post Reference Number Vide CD080/11/01/2026 but no action is yet to be taken against the perpetuators of the violence.
Nandala Fred and John Namasibe from Dooba Parish who are currently nursing wounds said that after the attack, Police only visited the scene of crime and documented the incident but up to now nothing has been done to the attackers.
They said they expected the attackers to be arrested since they are known people in the community and they were identified to the Police officers.
Mudimi on his side says that the elections in the constituency have turned very violent. He said that several cases have been reported over the same but the District Police Commander has been reluctant on taking action in order to avoid further clashes.
“The DPC is taking sides, she has failed to provide security for all the candidates, whatever is happening is happening at her watch and I want to tell you the elections are turning deadly but it looks like the security teams in the district are not bothered” he said.
The Bulambuli District Police Commander Shifa Viva Kiribwa dismissed the claims noting that the Police has already processed the file and also sent a report to the regional headquarters.
