A gang suspected of stealing more than 32 million shillings from individuals in Kampala has been arrested by the Police. The gang was reportedly uncovered after the August 24, 2026, robbery of an unspecified amount of money from a Nigerian national along the US Embassy area, triggering d investigations by Flying Squad detectives in Kampala Metropolitan Police East.
Police say the investigations have so far led to the arrest of three suspects identified as Sadic Byanyima, Joseph Waibale and Ivan Kisongode.
Detectives have linked the suspects to several robberies in which victims carrying cash were allegedly followed by motorcycle riders before being attacked.
Among the cases under investigation is the August 17 robbery along Bukoto Heights, where a cashier attached to Tirupati was robbed of about 22 million shillings while travelling to a bank.
The case was reported at Kira Road Police Station. Police arrested two suspects on September 19 and recovered one motorcycle.
A third suspect was arrested on September 24, leading to the impounding of two more motorcycles. Four Haojue motorcycles believed to have been used in the robberies are now in police custody.
They are registered as UMA 366LZ, UMA 018MX, UMA 073NP and UMA 018NX.
The suspects have also been linked to a January 2026 robbery in Mpererwe, where about 10 million shillings were stolen from a person who had just left a bank.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the arrests and said the suspects allegedly operated by trailing people carrying money from banks.
He said some members of the gang would ride behind the victims while accomplices, who are still at large, would snatch their cash bags.
“The suspects are in our custody as investigations continue, and they will be taken to court upon completion of the necessary inquiries,” Owoyesigyire said.
Police are continuing to pursue other suspected members of the gang and are investigating their alleged roles in the robberies. The arrests come amid a series of motorcycle-related robberies reported in Kampala in recent months.
Earlier this month, police linked four suspects, Ssemanda Yasin alias Zanda, Jjingo Ramathan alias Rama, Kasumba Cohen alias Farouk and Musoke Eric, to another gang accused of using motorcycles and pangas to rob victims across the city.
Police linked that group to the August 11 robbery of 25.8 million shillings from a fuel station manager along the Kasubi-Makerere-Kikoni road.
The suspects were also linked to the July 24 robbery of a businessman along Kawaala Road, in which 4.8 million shillings, an iPhone 16 Pro Max, and jewelry were reportedly stolen. Police further linked the group to robberies involving 620 million shillings from Forex Bureau workers along Kampala Road and an attempted robbery of 27 million shillings in Namugongo.
In July, police also arrested eight suspects in Ntinda after receiving intelligence that they were allegedly planning a series of robberies targeting businesspeople carrying large amounts of cash, particularly mobile money operators. The latest investigations point to continued police concern over organised motorcycle gangs targeting people transporting cash in and around Kampala-URN.
