Police in Hoima City have arrested three men accused of terrorising residents of Busiisi Cell in Hoima West Division.
The suspect, Ismail Kamanyire alias Musiramu, Kennedy John alias Bosco, and Benedict Ahumuza, all residents of Busiisi, are alleged to have, for months, attacked locals, snatching bags and phones, ambushing motorcycle riders, and breaking into homes to steal valuables. Armed with machetes, the gang reportedly staged roadblocks and injured several victims.
Robert Biribonwa, a member of the Busiisi East Defence Committee, said the attacks have forced residents to retreat indoors as early as 6 p.m. for fear of assault. He urged the community to work closely with security agencies and report strangers promptly.
Another resident, Nerbert Muhanuzi, condemned the crimes, blaming idleness among some youth who have shunned productive work.
Hoima District Police Commander Jimmy Tumwiine said the suspects were arrested during a joint operation involving police, area leaders, and vigilantes. They are cooperating with investigators and will be arraigned in court once inquiries are complete.
Tumwiine appealed to the public to share any information that could lead to the arrest of their accomplices, noting that the hunt for more suspects continues.
This latest operation follows an August crackdown in which police, together with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces and other security agencies, arrested 20 suspects in Kiryatete East and West and Kiganda, after a surge in thefts and violent attacks targeting residents and businesses.
