The Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City is steadily shedding its construction-site look as the project enters the final stretch, with works now at 75 percent.
Across the sprawling complex, workers are busy with finishing touches, landscaping and installations, as concrete, steel and fresh artificial turf reshape the facility into one of northern Uganda’s biggest sporting landmarks.
The main stadium is beginning to look ready for the crowds: Rows of spectator seats have been fixed into place, leaving only the VIP section to be completed; the turf (artificial grass) is being laid on the training pitch and other playing fields. The bright new surfaces stand in sharp contrast to the unfinished sections, capturing a project moving from heavy construction to fine finishing.
Beyond the main arena, activity is also picking up in Zone Two, where a clubhouse, swimming pool, multi-purpose court, tennis court, mini arena and another training pitch are taking shape.
The 20,000-seater stadium, named after Uganda’s legendary, pioneer Olympic gold medallist John Akii-Bua, is being built by Egypt’s SAMCO National Construction Company. URN visited the site and captured photos unveiling the changing face of Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
