Fresh details have emerged on how police arrested the prime suspect in the murder of Kitebi secondary school student Faith Namata. She was first reported missing on Wednesday last week but later on recovered strangled to death with visible of sexual assault on her body.
Details show that Namata, who was aged 17, was on Wednesday called by her alleged boyfriend Jeremiah Kakande and the two were seen walking together in Kitebi between 7:30pm and 8:30pm. She never returned to her grandmother Regina Nabaggala on Wednesday and on the same night a case of a missing girl was reported to the police.
Nabaggala, who was joined by the deceased’s mother Doreen Nabawanuka, alerted police in Kitebi, and Nateete. Locals in Bunamwaya found the body of a female juvenile dumped at Kikumbi zone, in a bush near the road and they called Katwe police which collected and conveyed the body to the city mortuary.
As the relatives searched for Namata, they were informed of the body that had been picked from Kikumbi zone. Checking at Mulago morgue, their fears became true as their missing daughter was lying between other bodies.
Luckily enough, the locals who had seen Namata walking with Kakande alerted police which quickly moved to search for him from his rented room in Kitebi but they found when he had shifted. Detectives say Kakande’s new hideout was unearthed after he called the deceased’s friend inquiring on what was happening at school and she stayed. The friend who had already learned that Namata had been killed, informed the deceased’s relatives and they also informed police.
“As police, we advised the deceased’s friend to call Kakande and they agreed to meet in order to inform him what was on the ground as he had requested. We moved to the place where they agreed to meet and we arrested him alongside the bodaboda man who was riding him,” detectives said.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, said Kakande was arrested alongside Muhammad Kato, a bodaboda rider for purposes of understanding who was actually behind the murder and the motive.
Nabawanuka said her daughter was very innocent and she did not know that she had a boyfriend. Nabaggala, also said her granddaughter had never told her about having a boyfriend and was always home whenever she was not at school.
Information allegedly retrieved from the prime suspect Kakande indicates that he strangled her on suspicion of cheating on him with another student. He later used a bodaboda rider to dump her body in the bush at Kikumbi zone, in Bunamwaya, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality, in Wakiso district.
Namata’s murder scenario is similar to that of Jackline Nakabembe, who was punched to death by her boyfriend Dickens Agumeneitwe over infidelity. Nakabembe’s body was collected from Naguru trenches by police and the relatives recovered her body buried at city cemetery in Bukasa, Bweyogerere after a month. She was five months shy to her bachelor’s degree graduation at Makerere University.
