The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) has joined Ugandans in mourning the death of veteran statesman Gen. Moses Ali, confirming that the party will take part in the national funeral programme as the country prepares to honour one of its longest-serving public servants.

Speaking during the party’s weekly press briefing in Kampala on Monday, PFF Acting Chairman and Deputy President for Buganda, Dr. Lulume Bayiga, conveyed the party’s condolences to the family of the late Gen. Ali and said a delegation would travel to Adjumani District for the burial.

“We have taken responsibility as a national party. We have our message, and we shall go for the burial in Adjumani,” Bayiga said. He added that other party members would also attend funeral prayers to pay their last respects to the former First Deputy Prime Minister.

Bayiga said PFF would honour Gen. Ali in line with its internal procedures rather than responding to external expectations. “A national party knows who is going to go where and what message to send. We are already organized,” he said. While addressing journalists, Bayiga also defended the party’s commitment to peaceful political engagement, saying its leaders have consistently pursued constitutional means in their political activities.”I think we are better placed to teach others about non-violence because none of us has ever taken up arms to overthrow this government,” he said. He also criticized what he described as politically motivated arrests of opposition politicians and lawyers, alleging that security agencies continue to suppress dissent through fabricated charges. Gen. Moses Ali died on Saturday at Nakasero Hospital at the age of 87 after a period of illness.

His death marked the end of a public service career that spanned more than five decades, during which he served as a military commander, cabinet minister, legislator, lawyer and former First Deputy Prime Minister under different political administrations. Since the announcement of his death, tributes have continued to pour in from political leaders, religious institutions, civil society organisations and members of the public, many describing him as a patriot whose contribution to Uganda’s development transcended political divides.Meanwhile, preparations for his state funeral have entered the final stages. Government Chief Whip Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng has announced that President Yoweri Museveni will join Members of Parliament on Tuesday morning for a special parliamentary sitting to pay tribute to the late statesman. “I have received information that H.E. the President will join us to pay tribute to Hon. Gen. Moses Ali in Parliament on Tuesday, 21st July 2026, at 9:00 a.m.,” Aceng said in a communication to legislators.

She urged Members of Parliament to report by 8:00 a.m. to allow time for security screening before the President’s arrival. After the parliamentary tribute, Gen. Ali’s body will be flown to Adjumani District ahead of burial on Wednesday at his ancestral home.

“The body will then be flown to Adjumani the same day after the eulogy,” Aceng said. On Sunday, hundreds of mourners gathered at several Islamic centres in Kampala, including Naguru Mosque, Kibuli Mosque, the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) Kibuli Campus and the Gaddafi National Mosque in Old Kampala, where special funeral prayers were offered for the late leader.

The prayers attracted senior government officials, political leaders, diplomats, religious leaders, members of the Nubian community, family members and ordinary Ugandans, who remembered Gen. Ali as a devout Muslim, peacemaker and patriot.

As the nation prepares to lay him to rest, Gen. Moses Ali is being remembered for a remarkable career that spanned military service, governance, parliamentary leadership and efforts toward national reconciliation, leaving a legacy that shaped Uganda’s political and security landscape for more than half a century-URN.
