Police in Busoga East have arrested David Basutaine, the chairperson of Buyera Parish Development Model-PDM over extortion.
Basutaine, a resident of Buyeera village, in Mpungwe sub-county, in Mayuge district, was reportedly extorting 100,000 Shillings from members to access PDM funds.
Stephen Maka, a member, says that all Sacco members held a meeting where he was shortlisted to receive the PDM funds. However, he was struck off the list, and when he confronted Basutaine, he was tasked to remit 100,000 Shillings; failure of which he would not be eligible for the money.
Maka filed his complaint at Mayuge central police station, where officers immediately arrested and detained Basutaine.
The Assistant Resident District Commissioner of Mayuge, Michael Musebe, says that over eight SACCO members filed extortion complaints against Basutaine.
Musebe says that Basutaine is among the many PDM Sacco chairpersons taking advantage of the desperate beneficiaries to fleece them of their money.
Musebe says that he has since directed Basutaine to refund all the money extorted from the PDM beneficiaries, and a general enquiry file has been opened.
Basutaine, however, denied the allegations against him, saying that the beneficiaries were only paying 10,000 Shillings processing fees for photocopying of the beneficiary’s documents and transporting them for physical verification at the district commercial office-URN.
